Word to PDF Converter: Turn a DOCX into a PDF

Add a Word .docx file, check every page in the preview, and save it as a PDF with your browser's built-in Save as PDF. Text stays sharp and selectable, and Hindi and other languages work. The document is never uploaded.

How to convert Word to PDF

  1. 1Add your Word file. Drop a .docx file onto the box or tap to choose it. Old .doc files need saving as .docx first.
  2. 2Check the preview. Every page appears as it will print. Scroll through to check headings, tables and pictures.
  3. 3Select Save as PDF. Your browser's print window opens with only the document in it.
  4. 4Choose Save as PDF and save. Pick Save as PDF as the printer or destination. On an iPhone, tap the share button in the print window and choose Save to Files. The suggested file name matches your Word file.

Why it uses your browser's Save as PDF

Every modern browser can make PDFs itself, with real, selectable text and the fonts your device uses for each language. Using that instead of a heavy conversion engine keeps this page quick to open on a phone, and your document never has to leave your device.

The one extra step is choosing Save as PDF in the print window. Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on computers, and Chrome on Android, all offer it.

What carries over

  • Text with its fonts, sizes, bold, italic, underline and colours
  • Headings, numbered and bulleted lists, and paragraph spacing
  • Tables, pictures and page breaks
  • Page size, orientation and margins from the Word file
  • Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and other scripts typed in Unicode

Limits to know

Fonts that are not on your device are swapped for similar ones, so line breaks can move slightly. Word's common fonts such as Calibri and Times New Roman are usually present on Windows and Mac; on phones the nearest match is used.

Text boxes, shapes, charts and page numbers in footers may not appear exactly as in Word. Documents typed in older Hindi fonts such as Kruti Dev show as jumbled letters unless that font is installed. For a pixel-perfect copy of a complex layout, export the PDF from Word or Google Docs itself.

After converting

To shrink the PDF for an upload limit, use Compress PDF. To join it with other files, use Merge PDF, and to sign it, Sign PDF. To turn a PDF back into an editable document, use PDF to Word.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Word to PDF converter free?

Can I convert an old .doc file?
