PDF to Word Converter: Turn a PDF into an Editable DOCX

Convert a PDF into a Word document you can edit, keeping the text, fonts, headings and pictures. Scanned pages are read as text too. The PDF is converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it suits contracts, results and other private documents.

How to convert a PDF to Word

  1. 1Add your PDF. Drop a PDF onto the box or tap to choose one. If it has a password, remove it first with Unlock PDF.
  2. 2Wait for the conversion. Each page is read in turn. Text pages take a moment; scanned pages take longer because the text is read from the image.
  3. 3Download the Word file. Save the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs, WPS Office or any word processor. A summary shows how many pages, paragraphs and pictures it holds.

What carries over

  • Text as real, editable paragraphs, with lines rejoined so a sentence is not broken at every line end
  • Font, size, bold and italic for each stretch of text
  • Headings, set as Word heading styles so they appear in the navigation pane
  • Centred and right-aligned lines such as titles, addresses and dates
  • Photos, logos and other pictures, placed where they appear in the reading order
  • The page size, with a page break between the PDF's pages; repeated page headers, footers and page numbers are left out so the text flows
  • Two-column pages, read down the first column and then the second

Best for text documents

Letters, reports, notices, assignments, resumes and articles convert well, because their layout is mostly paragraphs. The result is a document you can edit, not a pixel-perfect copy of the PDF.

Tables come out as lines of text rather than Word tables, text boxes become ordinary paragraphs, and forms lose their fields. Text colours are not kept, and lines, shapes and charts drawn by the PDF rather than stored as pictures are left out. Check the result against the PDF and adjust the layout where it matters.

Scanned PDFs

A page with no text layer, such as a scan or a photo of a document, is read with text recognition and added as plain paragraphs. It works on clear printed English; handwriting, Hindi and other scripts are not recognised.

Recognised text can contain mistakes, especially in names, numbers and small print, so the summary tells you how many pages were read this way. Proofread those pages before you send the document anywhere.

Private by design

Most PDF to Word sites upload your file to their server. Here the whole conversion runs in your browser: the PDF never leaves your device, and nothing is stored after you close the page.

Only the text-recognition engine for scanned pages is downloaded the first time it is needed. Your document itself is never sent.

Only need the text?

To copy the words without any formatting, use Extract PDF text. For a photo or screenshot rather than a PDF, use Image to text. To check a word limit, PDF word count counts words, characters and pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF to Word converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Files up to 20 MB are supported.

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

Close for text documents, but not identical. Text, fonts, headings and pictures carry over; tables, text boxes and complex layouts come out as plain paragraphs, and drawn charts and shapes are left out.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

Yes, for printed English. Scanned pages are read with text recognition, which can make mistakes, so proofread names and numbers.

Does it work with Hindi PDFs?

When the PDF stores Hindi as standard Unicode text, it carries over. PDFs typed in older Hindi fonts such as Kruti Dev come out as jumbled letters, and scanned Hindi pages are not recognised yet.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you have, then convert the unlocked file.

Which programs open the file?

Word, Google Docs, WPS Office, Apple Pages and any other program that opens .docx files.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser and the file stays on your device.
