NEET UG documents and photo size at a glance

The NEET UG application, run by NTA, asks for more files than most exam forms. Guides written from the 2026 information bulletin list these:

  • Passport-size photo: JPG, 10 to 200 KB, colour, plain white background
  • Postcard-size photo (4 x 6 inches): JPG, 10 to 200 KB, same style as the passport photo
  • Signature: JPG, 4 to 30 KB, black ink on white paper
  • Finger and thumb impressions of both hands, on the template given in the form: JPG, 10 to 200 KB
  • Class 10 certificate, and category, PwBD or citizenship documents where they apply
  • A live photo taken during the form, matched with your Aadhaar photo

A few guides print other figures, such as 10 to 100 KB for the signature. A signature between 4 and 30 KB passes every version. Check the bulletin for your year, which is the final word.

What is new for 2026: live photo and Aadhaar match

From 2026, the form verifies your identity through Aadhaar-based eKYC and a live photo. You take the live photo through a webcam or, with a QR code, on your phone, and NTA compares it with the photo in your Aadhaar record. Only a matching photo lets you continue to fee payment.

The live photo is in addition to the passport and postcard photos, not instead of them. You still upload both.

For a clean capture, sit facing a window against a plain wall, remove caps, masks and spectacles, look straight at the camera, and keep your face filling most of the frame. Ask someone to hold the phone at eye level rather than taking a selfie.

If your live photo does not match Aadhaar

A mismatch usually comes from an old Aadhaar photo, a changed hairstyle or beard, or a dark, blurred capture. It is not a rejection; it means NTA checks your identity by hand.

The usual way through:

  • First retake the live photo in better light, without spectacles
  • If it still fails, print the verification certificate from the portal, not the blank one in the bulletin
  • Paste a recent passport-size photo, fill in your details and leave the live photo on it as printed
  • Have it signed and stamped by your school or college principal, or a Class-I Gazetted Officer, with the seal, date and place clear
  • Scan it and upload it in the form

Once NTA verifies it, the form reopens for payment. Allow a few days for this, so do not leave the application to the last week.

Passport and postcard photos: the name and date rule

Several guides written from the 2026 bulletin say the candidate's name and the date the photo was taken must appear below both the passport and postcard photos, with the photo taken on or after 1 January of the exam year. Forgetting the name and date is one of the most common mistakes they list.

Other rules for both photos:

  • Colour, with a plain white background and no shadows
  • Face covering about 80 percent of the photo, with both ears visible and a neutral expression
  • No cap or sunglasses; regular spectacles only if you wear them every day
  • No Polaroid or computer-generated photos, and no filters

Use the same photo for the form and on exam day. The Photo with Name and Date tool adds the band and sizes it; choose NEET UG for the passport photo and NEET UG postcard photo for the 4 x 6 inch one.

The postcard photo and exam day

The 4 x 6 inch postcard photo is uploaded in the form and also used at the exam centre for attendance and identity checks. Guides differ on exactly where it is pasted, on a proforma that comes with the admit card or alongside the attendance record, so follow the instructions printed on your admit card.

Keep prints ready well before exam day: most guides suggest four to six postcard photos and six to eight passport photos, all from the same session as the uploaded photo. The Passport Size Photo Maker makes a print sheet of passport photos, and a photo shop can print the postcard size from the same file.

Signature, finger and thumb impressions

Sign on plain white paper with a black ballpoint pen, in your usual running hand and not in capital letters. Photograph it in daylight with the phone flat above the page and frame it tightly so little empty paper remains.

For the impressions, the form provides a template for the fingers and thumbs of both hands. Press each finger once on an ink pad and then once in its box, without rolling or smudging. A smudged or partly missing impression is a common reason for a correction notice, so practise on scrap paper first and photograph the finished template in good light.

The template is a whole-page scan, so use Compress Image to bring it inside the 10 to 200 KB range if it comes out larger.

Resize your NEET photos and signature

The Exam Photo and Signature Resizer has a NEET UG preset with one slot per file:

If you need the name and date on the photos, use the Photo with Name and Date tool instead for the two photos; it applies the same NEET sizes. Everything runs in your browser, so your photos stay on your device until you upload them to the NTA portal.

Common reasons for correction or rejection

  • Photo outside 10 to 200 KB, or signature outside 4 to 30 KB
  • Missing name and date below the photos, where your bulletin asks for them
  • Photo taken before 1 January of the exam year, or a different photo on exam day
  • Background not white, or a cap, sunglasses or heavy shadow
  • Signature in capital letters or blue ink
  • Smudged, rotated or incomplete finger and thumb impressions
  • Live photo that does not match Aadhaar, left unresolved until the deadline

NTA usually opens a short correction window after the last date; recent cycles allowed photos to be replaced there. Do not rely on it, because it lasts only a few days.

Common questions

Does the live photo replace the passport photo? No. You upload the passport and postcard photos as well.

What if my Aadhaar photo is very old? Try the live photo in good light first. If it still fails, upload the attested verification certificate from the portal.

Can I wear spectacles in the photos? Only if you wear them every day, and with no glare. For the live photo, it is safer to remove them.

Is the name and date compulsory? Most guides for 2026 say yes for both photos. Check your bulletin; if it asks, add both.

How many prints should I keep? Four to six postcard photos and six to eight passport photos, all matching the uploaded photo.
